If you’ve been up late into the night unable to sleep, you may have heard of something called binaural beats. I discovered them one night when I just couldn’t seem to fall asleep. I had been laying in bed for hours tossing and turning when I finally gave up on trying to sleep. I figured I would check the good ol’ internet to see what I could find for tips on getting to sleep. I am not willing to take pills to fall asleep so I was looking for a drug-free way to ease myself to dreamland. I came upon binaural beats. They are supposed to help you to sleep. I was quite skeptical, and I had to ask myself, do binaural beats work?
After some research I came to the conclusion that yes binaural beats CAN work. How they work was really the question. If I couldn’t find the answer to that question I was certain it was all a hoax. I found that there is some substantial science behind these beats or tones.
As it turns out, binaural beats are composed of two tones, on slightly different frequencies, played through the left and right channel of headphones. As you listen your brain perceives the tones as a pulsing frequency. The idea is that as you listen your brain waves will move toward the frequency that is being perceived. When done properly the tones will cause your brain waves to slow toward the point of sleep. So do binaural beats work? Yeah they CAN work.
Taking all of the above into consideration there is no definite answer to the question, “do binaural beats work?”. This is because while it has been scientifically explored, and observed, there is no scientific formula to explain it. I find that they work for me, and when faced with other options like pills, they are a great choice. In addition to being risk free, they are immediately available for download which was key for me in using them. When its 2am and everyone else is sleeping, there are few satisfying options when it comes to help with falling asleep. So give them a shot and try to get that rest!
